How to Change Your Car’s Oil

checking the engine oil

Regular oil changes are vital for maintaining the longevity and performance of your car. Oil is your vehicle’s lifeblood, so keeping it fresh and free of debris is key. You can perform your own oil change at home in Sarasota with the proper supplies, tools, and know-how.

Oil Change Supplies

For an oil change that is quick and relatively clean, you will need:

  • High-quality oil filter
  • Oil filter gasket
  • Engine oil
  • Container to catch used oil
  • Plastic tarp or drop cloth
  • Wrench set
  • Rags
  • Rubber mallet
  • Safety glasses (optional)

Oil Change Steps

Once you’ve gathered your materials, you can begin your at-home oil change with these easy steps. If your engine is cold, it’s always good to let it run for a few minutes to get the oil warmed up. Lay down a tarp to protect from spills, and gather all your materials so they are within reach once you’re under the car. Now it’s time to switch out the oil!

  1. Place a container under your engine to catch the used oil. Pull the drain plug, removing it from the oil stream, and let all the used oil run out.
  2. Remove the oil filter, and install the new one.
  3. Install and tighten the new oil gasket once the used oil has nearly run out.
  4. Slowly pour in the new oil. Run the engine for about 60 seconds to let the oil settle.
  5. Check the oil level to ensure you’ve added enough, repeating step 4 until you’ve reached the appropriate setting for your vehicle.
  6. Clean up any oil drips, and then give your car a test drive.
