How Do I Measure Tire Tread Depth?
Tire tread depth is measured by 32nds of an inch. Most tires start new at 10/32”, though winter tires can be deeper. When tires reach the 2/32” mark, it is recommended to get a new set for optimal grip and safety for your daily Sarasota commute.
You can perform what is known as the “penny test” to check your tire tread depth:
- Place a penny with Lincoln’s head facing downwards into a tire tread
- If his head disappears between the treads, your tires are still in good shape
- If his head is completely visible, your tire treads are not deep enough and should be replaced
Depending on your typical Tampa driving conditions, your tires may wear unevenly, so it’s important to perform the penny test in multiple spots on your tires. If any areas fail the test, it’s time to get new tires.
Why is Tire Tread Depth Important?
Your tires help you grip the road, especially in wet or rainy weather conditions. The tread patterns on your tires are designed to move water away from your wheels, allowing you to stay in control. Once your tires lose their optimal depth, they become “bald” and it is difficult for them to maintain hold on roads, resulting in possible tire spinning or hydroplaning.
How Often Should I Get My Tires Replaced?
Outside of tire tread depth, there are other signs you may need to replace your tires. The average set of tires can last up to 50,000 miles, but that number depends heavily on your driving style. More aggressive driving or stop-and-go conditions can cause your rubber to wear out faster. At the very minimum, it’s important to replace your tires at least every six years. Ask your mechanic during your next tire rotation about the condition of your tires.
