Tire Advice
We here at Cox Chevy realize that cars are pretty mysterious. As your Chevy dealer serving Tampa, we deal with all different types of car knowledge, from the gear heads who do their own repairs to the people that just want their car to move them around with the least amount of trouble. From what we can tell, it’s certainly worth putting in a few minutes to learn something about how your car works. It helps you become a more educated consumer, which is important when buying a new car or getting a repair. It’s with this in mind we’d like to share a few things with you about tire care.
Don’t Buy Used
This isn’t just a trick the tire companies use to get you to buy more new things, it’s actually important. Used tires, or even old stock tires that have been sitting in storage, have decayed. You never know the history of a tire if you can’t guarantee it’s new. Even if it’s never been used, rubber breaks down over time and tires only have a shelf life of a few years. Driving on old tires is a risk. If your tires are used they might have been damaged in a way that’s difficult to see; a price that’s never worth the risk.
Why Balance and Rotate?
You need to rotate your tires regularly because they wear unevenly. Usually the front wheels wear faster because they carry more weight (the engine) and do more work (steering). This is why when you go in for an oil change or other maintenance you are usually asked if you want your tires rotated; the rear goes to the front and they switch around in a scheduled way so they wear evenly. If it’s out of balance, there will be an unmistakable vibration at certain speeds while you’re driving.
