The 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 is Built to Fly

Before you go staring up into the sky, we should clarify that the 2014 Chevy Camaro Z/28 is not a flying car. But it is such a fast, powerful, and thrilling vehicle that it sometimes leaves the road, and Chevy engineers have found an inventive way to take advantage of that fact.

The Camaro Z/28 is essentially a race car made by a major auto manufacturer. It routinely gets pitted against some of the finest sports cars in the world on real race tracks. When going over hills and bumps, it is common for high-performance vehicles like these to have at least one of their tires come off the track, and sometimes they get completely airborne.

Flying Car Logic

Most vehicles are built to choke the torque back when this happens. But Chevy has built what they are calling flying car logic into the Performance Traction Management system inside the Z/28. This unique technology can sense when the tires leave the track, and keep the levels of power stable. That way, when the tires come back down, they have just as much torque, traction and horsepower behind them.

This may sound like a minor tweak, but in tests it actually shaved almost five seconds off the lap time of the Z/28. That helped this thrilling Camaro model to beat out the Porsche 911 S and Lamborghini Murcielago LP640 for fastest lap. Chevy developed the technology at GM’s Milford Proving Ground in Michigan, a hotbed for automotive innovations.

Most people will not get the opportunity to drive a Z/28 so fast that they leave the ground, but the system that Chevy has developed says something about the automaker as a whole.
