The 2013 Chevrolet Spark: a Small Car With Big Sales
At Cox Chevrolet, we’re big fans of the 2013 Spark. It’s certainly a departure for Chevy, an automaker that’s perhaps best known for producing big, capable trucks and versatile SUVs, but it’s clear that the vaunted American automaker has tapped a hitherto underserved desire for a small car in the American automotive market.
According to Automotive News, the diminutive Spark sold 26,869 units during its first 12 months on the market, a stunning 35% increase over the sales that Chevy itself had projected. The Spark has been available in other markets around the world since 2009 — selling 720,000 units since then — and Chevrolet clearly made a good decision in finally bringing it to the U.S.
Part of this is the price: the base MSRP for the 2013 Spark is $12,185, leading it to have the lowest transaction price in its segment, with an average cost of $14,563. This is likely fueling interest among younger drivers and other first-time buyers.
Which isn’t to say that the 2013 Spark doesn’t have many other merits.
It’s certainly a small car, but its hatchback design lends it exceptional versatility. Behind the rear seats, there’s 11.4 cubic feet of cargo space; if you fold down the rear seats, you’ll have 31.2 cubic feet at your disposal. Drivers who opt for the 2LT trim will even get a roof rack, adding greater versatility.
Fuel economy is another strong point. The Spark comes equipped with a 1.2L four-cylinder engine paired with either a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission. With the manual, this little hatchback can deliver 32 mpg city/38 mpg highway/34 mpg combined.
The Spark lineup will be getting an exciting new addition soon, too: an all-electric version. The Spark EV will likely only be available in select markets to start, but it’s proof that Chevy is committed to this small car.
