Sparks are Flying

2013 Chevrolet SparkOkay, okay, we don’t have sparks flying wildly everywhere, and the 2013 Chevy Spark isn’t technically able to fly either, but sparks are flying between me and my Spark. I’d had my eyes on the new Spark for some time now, and just a month ago, I finally broke down and traded in my aging Hyundai Accent. You have no idea how badly I wish I’d done it sooner.

Deciding on the Spark

As a somewhat recent college graduate, I still have things like student loans to worry about and am just now settling into a job that feels much more like a career, so I didn’t want to drop a ton of money on what would be my first brand new car. That seemed to limit my options a bit, but only a bit.

When I started to narrow my choices to what I wanted and what I could afford, one jalapeno green beacon glowed brighter than all the rest. I’ve never wanted something big and bulky or that went from zero to sixty in two seconds, but something stylish and practical was always a consideration, and the Spark has style, practicality, and affordability in spades.

There were a fair number of options for me to choose from, but I settled on the 1LT trim with automatic transmission, because I never learned to drive stick and wanted to have the convenience of being able to stream music from my phone or connect my iPod up to the stereo system.

Driving it Home

Putting the Spark into gear was probably one of the more exciting experiences of my driving history; not just because this car was mine, really mine, but because I knew it was something I could afford. I knew that if I drove smart, I could manage almost 40 mpg. I knew I could max out the stereo system and have it sound excellent (it goes way past 11, by the way).

Now that I’m gearing up for a move, I actually wish I’d spring for the 2LT for the roof rails, but that’s the closest thing to a regret that I have with the Spark. If you want to learn more about Chevy’s sporty new subcompact, I encourage you to take one for a test drive. It’s truly a spectacular vehicle, and you won’t regret it.
