Checking When You Need New Tires

October 2nd, 2012 by

Cox Auto knows that, as your vehicle’s sole contact with the road, the integrity of your tires play a huge role in your stopping distance, handling, and performance in slippery conditions. All of that friction slowly wears down the face of your tires over time and reduces their ability to perform their job well. Tires that are reaching the end of their lives need a greater distance to stop the vehicle and also increase your risk of hydroplaning. Cox Auto Group specializes in selling quality used vehicles to Sarasota and Bradenton drivers and providing a professional service department that can help you replace or rotate your tires when the time comes.

An Update on the Tread Coin Test

But how do you know when your tires are worn out, and what does rotating them do? Checking them is simple and can be performed by anyone in just a few minutes. All you need is a quarter. Stick the quarter into a tread so Georgie’s head is pointed towards the center of the wheel. If the top of his head is hidden, you’re tires are doing good, and the more it’s hidden, the better. If it’s getting close or you can see the top of his head, your treads are dangerously thin and your tires should be replaced. Repeat this test across the face of the tire because all tires wear unevenly to some degree.

Tires should be rotated every 6,000 to 8,000 miles, and more often for vehicles with 4WD. This is because vehicle weight is distributed unevenly and causes one side of the tire to wear more than the other.
