High-Speed Internet is Coming to Future GM Models

While asking your phone for suggestions on the best local pizza places or for directions to the airport may not be anything new, the latest innovations in in-car connectivity seem to keep us on the edge of our seat. As Google continually pulls our attentions to tech blogs with rolling announcements over the progress of Google Glass, GM is starting to get people excited, too, including our staff here at Cox Chevrolet in Bradenton.

GM, the company behind brands like Chevrolet, Buick, and Cadillac, is partnering with AT&T to bring 4G LTE Internet to their vehicles. As the fastest Internet connection currently available, the inclusion of 4G LTE connectivity will effectively turn vehicles into mobile hotspots. GM is planning to equip 2015 models with 4G LTE broadband, which will start becoming available in mid to late 2014.

Most vehicles currently access online content and services through their drivers’ smartphones. Those vehicles that do have their own connectivity use slower 3G tech. GM’s 4G LTE system will offer lightning fast connectivity to directions, music streaming, area information, and more.

“Hotspot” shouldn’t be confused as a substitute for your home’s router, though. A GM spokesperson chimed in via email to answer this rising question:

“A lot of those types of details haven’t been finalized just yet, but like most in-vehicle technologies you can probably expect it to work for a certain amount of time after the ignition is turned off and then time out eventually.”

Cutting off access is a practical measure that will help to prevent undue stress on the car’s battery. The last thing you want to happen is t0 wake up and find that your battery is dead because your significant other had been up battling all night against players on the other side of the world in Halo.
