Tips and Tricks for Drivers

We all accumulate a variety of tricks of the trade for getting out of jams that we might encounter on the road. At Cox Auto, your Tampa Chevrolet dealer, we thought it would be nice to share some of the tips our staff has accumulated over their years. Oftentimes you can get out of a jam in ingenious fashion if you know some simple thing. Hopefully these tidbits will save you some trouble next time.

• Keep a bag of cat litter or sand in the trunk of your car. It will weigh down the rear wheels in slippery driving conditions like snow or mud and help you get traction if stuck in the snow or mud.
• Hide a business card with your name and contact info, and a note saying that you are the owner of the car. A good place is down the window slot in the door panel. If you ever need to prove ownership because your car has been stolen or otherwise, it’s right there. A Good Samaritan who is working on your stolen car may even track you down to notify you if they find the card in the door.
• Cleaning your car, especially the underside, will help prevent corrosion. If you’re washing your car at home, use a lawn sprinkler turned on all the way to clear grime and grit from you undercarriage.
• Nail polish is a suitable touch up paint for a chip or scratch. You may even be able to find a close match. Use a clear coat to make the repair even more durable.
• Battery posts might get better contact with Vaseline applied to them. Before you do that, consider cleaning the terminals. Cola can clean corrosion off battery connections very effectively.
• If you get stuck and need to shovel yourself out, but don’t have a shovel, you can use a hubcap.
