Cox Chevy Has Sold the Chevy Camaro Since Its Debut
The 2014 Chevy Camaro is a popular choice this year at Cox Chevy thanks to its tough driving style and aggressive design. Our Chevy dealership has been serving the Bradenton, Tampa, and Sarasota areas since we opened back in 1926. That means we’ve been lucky to have had the Chevy Camaro for sale every year it has been available.
The Debut of the Camaro
After the debut of the highly-anticipated Ford Mustang in 1964, the sports car arms race was on. The Mustang was fast, sporty, and cheap, making it an appealing option for the baby boomer generation. Being the first car of its kind to role of an American assembly line, the industry and public waited anxiously to see what Chevrolet’s response would be to this new breed of car.
It took more than two years for Chevy to muster a response, but the delivery would be quite impressive. On June 21st of 1966, Chevy sent out a telegram announcing a real-time press conference that would take place several days later, telling reporters that they hoped they would be one hand to “help scratch the cat,” a slight at the Mustang, whose production code-name was Panther.
Several days later, Chevy would then hold a conference call that linked 14 different U.S. cities by telephone, which was the largest meeting of its type at the time. As reporters anticipated, Chevy announced that they would be releasing a car that would compete with the Mustang. Falling in line with other models that began with the letter C, such as Chevelle, Corvette, and Corvair, the new Chevy sports car would be named Camaro. When asked what a Camaro was by a curious reporter in on the call, Chevy product managers simply replied “[it’s] a small viscous animal that eats mustangs.”
Birth and Rebirth
The Camaro would be released later that year as a four-seat coupe, along with a convertible option. Over the years, like the Mustang, the Camaro would gradually grow in size. It would share a similar design path to the Pontiac Firebird, until both vehicles were discontinued in 2002.
In 2010, the Camaro returned with a look that bore a much stronger resemblance to the original model than the design that had been discontinued in 2002. Though part of the same generation as the 2010 model the new 2014 Camaro received a refresh with new head and taillights, and a more aggressive grille.
