The Chevy Volt is the Car For People Who Want to Keep Fuel Costs Low

One of my new favorite cars that we sell here at Cox Chevrolet is the 2013 Chevy Volt. It’s a plug-in hybrid available starting at $39, 145. Unlike a pure electric car, a plug-in hybrid is one that uses a combination of electricity and gasoline. There are a lot of competitors out there, but Chevy has managed to move one step ahead of them by maximizing battery power. Before we get to that, let me tell you what led me to hybrids.

 My First Gas-Guzzling Car

Sure an SUV certainly has its advantages, but as a first car it was a nightmare. Mine was not a Chevy and not built to last. It was breaking down constantly and developed this nasty problem where the engine would die randomly while I was driving; once I almost hit a parked school bus. Of course, the worst were the gas prices. I had to fill up at least once a week! Gas prices were really bad towards the end, so I was dropping seventy dollars a week sometimes. That’s when I knew my next car had to be as fuel efficient as possible.

In the 2013 Volt, you can easily get between 25 to 50 miles right from a single charge of the 16 kilowatt battery. Overall, it gets an estimated 35 mpg city and 40 mpg on the highway. The nicest thing about the newest Volt is that it has an electric hold feature that you won’t find on other hybrids.

With many hybrids, the car runs on the battery until the charge runs out. But what if you’re taking the car out on the highway right away when an electric-charge doesn’t make a lot of sense? With the hold mode, the car saves the electric for when it’s most needed. For example, after I leave work, I’m stuck idling at lights and stopping a lot during rush hour traffic. Idling is where gas is easily wasted and it makes a lot of sense to use the electric battery here.
