Chevy Unveils The New 2014 Corvette

It’s been over 30 years since Chevrolet has had a Corvette roll off the assembly line with the “Stingray” moniker. That will change later this year when the 2014 Corvette Stingray escapes from showrooms out to America’s grand concrete oceans. Now that Chevy has finally brought the Stingray back from the murky depths there’s a lot to discuss. Its exterior seems classically inspired, but what’s going on under the hood? Exterior

The designers of the seventh generation Corvette (C7) faced the unique challenge of crafting an aesthetically pleasing and performance enhancing exterior that embraced the classic Stingray elements in a modern way. By staying true to performance first and foremost, they succeeded admirably. Muscular front fenders and a tapered roof echo the shape of the original Stingray while a series of vents reduce front-end lift, increase down force, and cool the brakes and powertrain. The aluminum space frame, and carbon fiber hood and roof reduce weight and improve rigidity for sportier performance without excess bulk.

Performance

Despite rumors to the contrary, Chevy stuck with a front-engine, rear transaxle powertrain configuration for the 2014 Corvette to preserve an ideal balance of power and weight. The new-and-improved 6.2L V8 cranks out 450 hp and 450 lb-ft of torque at the highest compression ratio of any production Corvette yet (11.5:1), and drivers can choose between seven-speed manual or six-speed automatic transmissions with paddle shifters. Remarkably, even with the jump in power, fuel consumption remains about the same as the previous model year (16 city/26 highway mpg).

Interior

The 2014 Corvette delivers performance you can really feel. Choose from Grand Touring or Competition Sport seats—each wrapped in premium Napa leather and optimized for comfort or track performance respectively. The new Driver Mode Selector feature electronically tailors twelve performance variables to suit five distinct settings including Weather, Eco, Tour, Sport, and Track. The Driver Mode Selector reconfigures steering, suspension, and traction control sensitivity as well as the digital instrument cluster layout for a perfectly optimized driving experience.
