The Chevy Spark: How to Build a New Car for a New Generation

One of the things I adore about Chevrolet is that it is evident General Motors looks at the market and attempts to discover how they can best shape it in ways other automakers cannot. We’ve hit the point now where we have a generation behind the wheel that cannot remember a time without the internet, and yet so many automakers are trying to use the same old marketing techniques.

That’s not the case with Chevrolet, though, and it’s readily apparent in the Chevy Spark. The easy way out of appealing toward younger drivers is to just make a hybrid version of a vehicle, as most younger drivers are more concerned with fuel economy and the environmental effects of driving. Chevrolet did so much more with the Spark, though.

Although not a hybrid, the Spark offers hybrid-level fuel efficiency, meaning it will save money for the kids needing new cars and carrying tens of thousands of dollars in student loan debt. Despite this, by making the Spark small and stylish, it appeals easily to both city and suburban drivers, and at a price that has it competing with public transportation for city kids.

Remember how I said that this is a generation born with the internet? The Spark’s got all the tech features they’ll want too, including the patented Chevy MyLink, which acts as a command center for all of the technology that can be fused with the Spark.

Among all of those tech options, it may seem a bit strange to some drivers that there’s not a CD player standard; instead, you’ve got hookups and Bluetooth connectivity to allow USB, MP3, or smartphone connections that let you turn your gigs of music up to 11.

When you add in the reliability of a great Chevy warranty and the incredibly low price, it’s clear that this is a car that millennials will adore, with all of the features they need and without the frills of their parents’ generation.

Rather than just toss them a bone in the form of a trim level or features package as many other automakers do, Chevrolet has given millennials a whole new vehicle designed to fit their sensibilities and needs.
