Chevy Jump Starts Change in NASCAR

Now Chevrolet is pushing toward the future not just on the road but on the track, as Jeff Gordon drove a brand new 2014 Chevrolet SS onto the Daytona International Speedway to rounds of applause. The SS is the basis for the new Chevy Sprint Car Cup and is the first rear-wheel drive sport sedan that Chevrolet has produced in 17 years.

The rigorously controlled NASCAR series demands incredible performance and certain safety features from its cars, while also requiring them to be made similar to “stock” sedans. Toyota, Ford, and Chevrolet are the only manufacturers that provide cars for NASCAR series, and the sport’s governing body ultimately chooses what cars are allowed to race.

Reportedly, Chevrolet insinuated that they would just as soon pull out of the race series if they were not allowed to produce cars they felt were technologically relevant. The Impala SS that had been racing since 2008 was completely redesigned for 2014, and the Chevy SS which debuts as a 2014 model will sport a V8 that produces 414 hp stock.

Chevy has won 10 straight manufacturer titles and hopes that new SS will help that streak continue. The new line of cars will be more easily distinguishable so it will be even easier to cheer on the drivers in the Chevy SS from now on. Chevy has won 36 manufacturer titles overall, and drivers in Chevy vehicles have come in first at 702 races thus far.

NASCAR Championship car owner Rick Hendrick said, “We had the drivers as stars, and we used to have the cars as stars, now I think we’ve got them both again, and that’s the neatest part about this deal.”
