What is OnStar?

In case you and the OnStar system haven’t met yet, allow us the pleasure of introducing you. If you’re in a bind, simply press the red OnStar emergency button and instantly interact with OnStar Emergency Advisors who can call for help and instruct on how to proceed while you wait for emergency services to arrive. Over 30 GM models are equipped with the system, including many Chevrolets.

Soon after its inception, Chevrolet began to notice that many OnStar emergency service requests were being made on behalf of other drivers. In fact, over 655,000 such “Good Samaritan” requests have been made using the service since 1996. 80,000 of those were made in 2012 alone.

The Chevrolet Good Samaritan Award

After noticing the large number of Good Samaritan OnStar requests, Chevy created the Good Samaritan of the Year Award to recognize drivers for heroic reactions to potentially tragic circumstances. This year’s winner is Tyler Andrews from Dallas, TX, who helped revive an unresponsive man on the side of the road while waiting for help to arrive.

“I pushed my OnStar button the second I came upon the scene,” Andrews said. “OnStar stayed with us the entire time, giving us instructions and helping us to remain calm.”

Tyler’s award is particularly notable because when he was involved in a severe hit-and-run crash in 2008 — Tyler’s OnStar saved his life.
