Chevy’s 2014 Silverado Redesign Tops Consumer Reports’ Truck Tests
We’ve been big fans of the model for years, but we couldn’t be happier to learn that the recent 2014 Chevy Silverado redesign has earned it top scores from Consumer Reports in tests alongside the new RAM 1500. Fierce competitors for title of top pickup in the truck segment, the trusted consumer organization did note that both Chevy and RAM’s offerings are excellent vehicles — so what exactly was it that cause the Silverado 1500 to edge ahead?
“The Real Truck Stuff”
According to Consumer Reports‘ testers, Chevy simply provides more capability when it comes to things you need from a solid pickup truck: towing, hauling, and storing cargo. Director of automotive testing, Jake Fisher, said that while both models are great choices, the Silverado ““just has the edge in terms of the real truck stuff. Tows more, hauls more. That just makes a difference.”
Here’s a look at some of what drivers will find when it comes to, as Mr. Fisher says, “the real truck stuff”:
- Towing capability – Properly equipped models of the 2014 Silverado 1500 can tow up to 11,500 pounds. The RAM 1500 tops out at 10,350 pounds.
- Hauling capacity – Chevy’s truck will give drivers 2,007 pounds of hauling capability — more that 200 pounds more than RAM.
- Cargo storage – With a bed floor measuring 69.33 inches x 64.6 inches, the Silverado simply lets you load up more cargo than the RAM 1500 (which measures in at 67.4 inches x 66.4 inches).
More Power, More Efficiency
While Consumer Reports praised the 2014 Silverado 1500’s rugged capability, Chevy also manages to give drivers a slightly improved fuel economy over the RAM 1500 and the top-selling Ford F-150. With the Silverado’s EPA-estimated 18 mpg city edging out the 17 mpg city offered by RAM and Ford, Chevy drivers can end up saving quite a bit in the long run.
