The 2012 Chevrolet Suburban vs. the 2012 Ford Expedition

It could be easily argued that Chevy is the forefather of modern SUVs, which is what makes the 2012 Chevrolet Suburban such a popular selection for Sarasota drivers. With decades of engineering development backing its performance, this full-size family vehicle has superior towing capacity and warranty features that make it stand out among its rivals. Cox Chevrolet asks you to consider some of the facts when comparing the 2012 Suburban 1/2-Ton two-wheel drive LS against the 2012 Ford Expedition EL with 2WD XLT.

Engines and Performance

The new Chevy Suburban comes with a 5.3L V8 engine that produces 320 hp and 335 lb-ft of torque. The Ford Expedition has a 5.4L V8 that generates 310 hp and 365 lb-ft of torque. The Suburban edges out the Expedition by 10 hp, and even though the Expedition has a higher torque rating, it’s the Suburban that has more brawn.

When properly equipped the Suburban 1500 can tow up to 9,600 lbs whereas the Expedition EL has a maximum range of 8,900 lbs. When it comes to payload capacity, the Chevy leads the way with a high-end rating for 2,450 lbs. The Ford comes in at 1,580 lbs. — a difference of 870 lbs in favor of the Suburban.

Though competitively ranked in fuel economy, the Suburban pulls ahead of the Expedition. The Chevy gets 15 mpg in the city and 21 mpg on the highway. The Ford is rated at 14 mpg city and 20 mpg highway. It’s worth noting that over the lifetime of each vehicle, such a difference can add up with larger family cruisers.

One feature that makes the Suburban standout is that can turn off half of the engine’s firing cylinders to conserve fuel. The Expedition, on the other hand, lacks this type of technology.

Warranty

Another area where the Suburban outperforms the Expedition is the warranty package. Though many of the components are equally strong, Chevy’s roadside assistance program lasts for 100,000 miles, while Ford’s for only 60,000 miles. In addition, the Suburban comes with a 3-year/36,000-mile rust warrant, unavailable on the Expedition.
