When Should I Replace my Tires?
As time passes, the friction between the tire and the road causes the tire treads to wear down. The shallower the treads, the less gripping power your tires have with the road. The easiest way to check the condition of your treads is by doing a simple test that only takes a minute and an average quarter. You may have heard in the past that you should use a penny, but this gets your tires a little too close to an unsafe depth.
Start with any of the tires and stick the quarter into one of the treads on the tire. Washington’s head should be pointed downward towards the center of the wheel. If you can’t see the top of his head, then you’re most likely in the clear. If you can, or if you’re getting close, then you’re tires are wearing dangerously thin.
Repeat this step across the entire width of the tire. Since tires will always wear unevenly, your tires will have different tread depths at different points. Be sure to repeat this process for all your tires as just one bad egg can spoil the bunch.
Vital Tire Maintenance
As mentioned, regular tire rotations and wheel alignments can help to greatly increase the overall life of your tires. Our Bradenton service department provides both services. To see when your auto manufacturer recommends this work, please check your owner’s manual for a complete service schedule.
